"Cutting edge & experimental uses of paper evoking landscape imagery as well as social issues."
Sandy Bleifer is a Venice Beach artist, working with handmade/art papers & mixed media since the mid-70s, pushing the boundaries of the substance/medium. Paper is not only surface for the image, but a painting and sculpting material in and of itself.
Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"I maintain 2 collections: (1) images waiting for a paper idea to express them, and, (2) papers and paper manipulation techniques waiting for an image that will suggest what I can do with them. When I “straighten out” my studio clutter and handle these source materials, often I see the connections that I can make between the image and the art material/technique. And I can start to develop a new piece."

Q&A

What is your favorite material to work with?

"Paper of all kinds: art papers - especially Japanese papers - but also handmade papers by artisans, industrial papers like roofing tar paper, paper that already carries messages like newspapers, magazines, advertising flyers and billboards, and, especially trash and papers left over from my other work. I never throw out paper I’ve handled."

Q&A

What motivates and inspires you?

"The need to express my personal feelings/life experiences and perceptions about how I see the world. My work is my tool of communication. Often, after I create a piece that makes a statement about, for example, grief or social justice, I can better understand my feelings by seeing them in the work, and only then can I verbally express it."
