Robin Daning

New Orleans, LA

Robin Daning is a New Orleanian who studied Art at Syracuse University and the University of Miami and earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of New Hampshire. She uses pen and brush to create finely detailed images with pigmented ink on the smooth sides of white plastic tiles (dominoes) and then covers them with matte varnish from one to several hundred of these original images are then attached to canvas/board to create an intricate three-dimensional piece.

Daning's pieces involve the use of multiple images with themes that include Louisiana music and architecture, and faces with a wide variety of expressions. Her interest in Louisiana music and architecture she attributes to her grandfather, Frank Bonansinga, a local jazz pianist who had a great love of New Orleans. She suggests that her interest in the human face and its endless variations in human expression reflects her fascination with psychology. Her use of repeated images reflects her appreciation for the constant tension that arises when we shift focus from the crowd as an entity to the specific individuals comprising that crowd. The overall effect of her work is whimsical and playful while exploring issues relevant to the basic human condition.
