Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"Sometimes a clean slate helps to propel a fresh design concept. One time I wasn't very excited about a certain design I had posted on our website, so I deleted it. Two minutes later I sketched a design I was excited about. A design must hold a designer's curiosity in the stages of its development."

Q&A

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?

"We won the Good Design Award in 2015 for a a sofa design that was born from two pieces of clay I intertwined late at night in 2008. Design pieces that become well-liked often seem to live lives of their own.
Designers simply pay attention to their curiosity."

Q&A

What is your favorite material to work with?

"My favorite material to work with is the amorphous thin film photovoltaic panel. It plays a double role because it acts as a mirror to reflect light and surrounding views, depending on viewing angle, and it also collects solar power. It works well indoors and under cloudy conditions because unlike the more common crystalline PV panel, it does not need to face direct sunlight."

Q&A

What makes a space special?

"The memories being created in a space can be enhanced by architectural or design elements such as a fireplace, a secret mezzanine, a carefully constructed view, or a cozy corner. I believe that spaces can be made special by sensual design elements that stimulate both mind and body, by means of material distribution, geometry, choice of materials, orientation. One of our points of focus is to create designs that may enhance the perception of subtle play of light."
