"The way our limbs fold or where we hold weight is our muscle memory telling our history."
Lynnea Holland-Weiss was born in 1990 and was raised in Berkeley and Oakland, California. She received her BFA from California College of the Arts. She currently lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio. She is represented by Galerie Sébastien Bertrand in Geneva, Switzerland.
Lynnea Holland-Weiss’ painting practice is immensely informed from her background in dance. It has influenced what she is interested in painting, as well as how she approaches her figurative compositions. She seems to take notice to even the most common and seemingly insignificant interactions happening daily. This hyper-awareness of body language and guttural aptitude for observing movement is at the root of her work. The human scenes she depicts are often moments removed from their initial narrative to focus more closely on the body language and highlight the emotional exchange. The focus is usually on relationships and interactions between these characters. Unexpected colors dividing up the bodies and graphic motifs surrounding them make the inner experience tangible.
