Illegally Abstract by Natalia Ackers

Toronto, Canada

As a teenager, I took as many visual art classes as possible throughout high school, however, I succumbed to the pressure of being the first Canadian child in an Eastern European and my post-secondary journey ended with a law degree while my artist output was reduced to doodles on draft contracts. After years of dedicating myself to my legal career, I was feeling burnt out and frustrated, and was drawn back to the arts. I picked up a paint brush in fall of 2016 and haven’t stopped painting since as it has provided me with the therapeutic antidote to the rigid and formal world I felt was suffocating me. I continue to work as an in-house lawyer, but my primary focus is now on painting and creative expression.
