Japanese photographer and architect Hiroshi Sugimoto is known for his distinctive photography series’, each with its own signature theme and style. Sugimoto views his photographs as “time exposed” with each photo representing a capsule of a moment in time. He is heavily influenced by Marcel Duchamp and the Dadaist and Surrealist movements, as well as 20th-century architecture. The artist is also an avid collector and has exhibited an extensive selection of East Asian artifacts. Sugimoto has been active since the 1970s and divides his time between Tokyo and New York. His work is in the public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Moderna Museet, Centre Georges Pompidou, Tokyo’s Museum of Contemporary Art, MoMA, the Smithsonian, MACBA, and London’s National Gallery and Tate Gallery.
