"A work of utility might also be a work of art, if we cared to make it so" William Morris 1893"
Dave was introduced to woodworking and furniture making while studying Fine Arts at Philadelphia College of Art in the late seventies. He continued his formal woodworking education at The Michael Coffey School, a two-year studio intensive program in southern Vermont. Following graduation in 1980, he stayed on as Craftsman in Residence, teaching various skill classes, assisting Michael in the workshop, and producing his own commissioned pieces. While maintaining an underlying theme of extremely high quality in the work he has done, Dave has had the opportunity to wear several hats during a ”thoroughly enjoyable” woodworking career. In addition to building studio furniture, he has worked as a commercial cabinetmaker, instructor in both furniture making and canoe building, production manager for a large architectural woodworking company, a partner in a small custom shop… “All experiences serving to expand my thinking about what is possible in a piece of furniture”. Dave’s home and workshop are located in Plainfield VT, about fifteen minutes from the state capital, Montpelier. He is a juried member of THE GUILD OF VERMONT FURNITURE MAKERS.
