"Candice Kaye Design is a textile studio specializing in bespoke wallpaper, fabric and rugs."
I always knew I wanted to make something with my hands, what that something was would be a journey to discover. After leaving an interior design program in New York City, my first stop was Paris, France. While in Paris, I wandered into a fabric manufacturing warehouse. As soon as I touched the hand embroidered fabrics, it was like my hands remembered something my mind had forgotten. It was love at first sight. I was home.

My formal training in textile was at The Fashion Institute in New York City. I have a vivid memory of my first day. I walked down the halls, passing classrooms filled with huge drafting tables covered in paint and large looms with student’s work draping from them. I was in New York City all alone but it did not matter. I knew this was the beginning of my adventure. Near the end of my school year, I was asked to create four custom prints for an upstart Soho cafe named Maman. Those four custom prints became the heart and soul of the brand. Maman now has six locations across New York City and Toronto.

That experience sparked the idea of creating textiles that were bespoke to the client. After Maman, I went on to create twenty-six custom prints for clients in Toronto, New York, St. Barths, Miami, Dallas and Australia. I’ve now expanded my bespoke services to include fabrics and rugs.

What drives me as a designer is the need to keep innovating in the textile industry. It excites me to know possibilities are endless.

While dreaming up custom prints for clients Candice Kaye Design also creates collections which are all sold by the panel in our shop.

Q&A

What is your favorite material to work with?

"I paint mainly with watercolor and gouache paints. Both I'm very happy to be working with. Recently exploring the rug industry I am really enjoying learning about the different weaves and materials. My main focus within the rug industry is to learn how the rugs are constructed so I can slowly push the boundaries within the weaves by creating designs with weaves that have never been done before."

Q&A

What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?

"At the moment I work mainly within the commercial space creating bespoke pieces for cafes, restaurants and hotels. I want the customer to feel a sense of escapism when they walk into a space covered in bespoke work. For instance when you walk into a Planta restaurant I want you to feel like you're walking into Planta through the design."

Q&A

What motivates and inspires you?

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it; Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. These two lines are often attributed to the great German playwright and thinker Johann Wolfgang von Goethe"

"The energy."

Q&A

What’s unique about your work?

"I love to play with scale and I'm not afraid of colour. What drives me as a textile designer is the need to create work that has never been seen before. The element of surprise is the goal."

Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"Every design is created based off feeling. It's important for me to capture the energy in the space first before the design process begins. Once we have the vibe of the space clear I first hand draw everything. Then the painting process begins. I then scan the artwork into the computer where I create the repeat for print."

Q&A

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?

"All of my clients have been the most lovely people. I've made some great life long friends. This was a pleasant surprise. I did not except how like minded my clients and I would be."
