Arnaldo Coen

Arnaldo Coen was born on June 10, 1940 in Mexico City, between 1959 and 1960 he worked in the studio of Laurence Calgagno and began experimenting in ““abstract expressionism”” however in his first solo exhibition in 1963 he presented ““figurative expressionism”” and from 1964 he ventured into ““fantastic expressionism””. He was awarded a scholarship by the French Government in 1967. In 1968 he was a founding member of the Independent Salon. In 1972 he participated in the creation of Robarte el Arte, a film that was filmed and shown in Documenta 5, Kassel, Germany. In his artistic development, he began to work with object paintings and sculpture, using as main theme the female torso with different treatments. From 1977 and 1978 he lived in Tanzania for the realization of the Urban Design Project of his new capital. Today, he is still working with different media and is involved with different activities regarding cultural promotion.
In addition to the painting he has done environments, sets and costumes for plays and dance.

He is considered a member of the ““Generación de la Ruptura”” (The Breakaway Generation), an important and influential generation of artists in Mexico that opposed the Mexican Muralism in favor of creating more free and personal art, without being bound by a specific style or the dogmatic and nationalistic approach of the muralists.

He has held important exhibitions in different cities in Europe, the United States, Latin America, India and Japan. In Mexico he has exhibited at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (National Palace of Fine Arts), the Museum of Modern Art, among others.
