American of Martinsville is a furniture manufacturer known for its mid-century modern furniture. Founded in 1906 in Virginia, American of Martinsville originally manufactured bedroom furniture but expanded into dining and living room furniture by the 1950s.
American of Martinsville furniture, often labeled as Danish modern, produced well-made wooden furniture that was known for using slats as a common design element. Individual pieces can be sold at auction for as much as $2,500 to $6,000, as of 2015. The Akin furniture company of Arkansas has bought the American of Martinsville furniture line and now manufactures dressers, nightstands, wardrobes and seating under the brand name, much of it intended for use in senior-living residences.
