The steel plate is treated in a rotating movement with Tannic Acid from Oak. Different shades of blue become visible on the steel by the intensity of tannic acid. The oak frame is treated on the inside with the rust of steel to darken the wood and join the two materials.
Plates are part of the project Tannic Acid. The project reveals the exceptional similarity in colour of oak and steel after the natural transition. The reaction between tannic acid and red iron oxide turns the materials into dark blue.

The projects of Steven Banken are based on research in origin and characteristics from different materials. This research is visible in his project Tannic Acid, a project about the natural transition between red iron oxide and tannic acid.

His approach results in a clear design with an eye for innovation, construction, and finish. The projects are designed and produced in his studio: from the first sketch to the final product.

Steven Banken is fascinated by the material wood, its craftsmanship, and its history. His great appreciation for industrial and artisanal techniques is visible in construction and detail.
