“Iwa" is #7 in my Wave Mandala series. I see these birds soaring high above the ocean when the storms are coming. The Hawaiian Frigate Bird, or Iwa bird, is a marvelous creature that survives in astonishingly extreme conditions. These sea birds don't have feathers that can get wet, but have evolved so that they are able to stay in flight for weeks sometimes months, riding air currents into massive clouds and storms. They are graceful, fierce, rascals who chase other birds to feed off their catches.
Wave mandala #7 is a wall hanging wooden sculpture. Each of my Mandala designs come to me in visualizations. This one I saw in my mind after a paddling session watching the birds soar far above. It was such a magical day!
I start the design process with visualization. Once I see in my mind the images I am meant to sculpt, I begin drawing with my eyes closed. Then I open, tweak the design, close them again and continue until the design is what I saw in my mind. I transfer the design onto solid wooden slabs, which I then I cut out the shapes by hand with my jig saw. After the design is cut out, I carve and sand the details with hand grinders, power carvers, and by hand. Mirror glass is custom cut for each piece and mounted in the back. It is finished with a special hand rubbed polyurethane. Clean the wood with a beeswax/orange oil wood cleaner. The glass is best cleaned with rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth.
