I feel that embroidery has a stigma of being old-fashioned, so I aim to give it a modern twist, creating a bridge between contemporary and ancestral art. I draw from the tradition of textile art, which is rich in my country. I have learnt embroidery techniques and stitches from women in Oaxaca and Chiapas, as well as from my mother. My work is a bridge to my past and a reflection of my present.”

Laila Vázquez is a watercolor and embroidery artist, born and raised in Mexico City. After experimenting with watercolor and printmaking for over twenty years, she found that embroidering her watercolors and prints directly on the paper creates a perfectly balanced mix of her favorite techniques. Currently, she works from her home studio in Mexico City, where she explores themes that revolve around Mexican landscapes and plants, like cactus and magueyes. Her work is currently sold in Carré d’Artistes galleries in Mexico City and Sedona, Arizona.
You can find her work on her website, lailavazquez.com, and on Instagram as @lailavazquezart.
