Clare Burson

Brooklyn, NY

Clare Burson is an American ceramic artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received her BA degree from Brown University and then spent over a decade recording albums and touring internationally as a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter. Her last release, Silver And Ash, was featured in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and on NPR.

Burson began life as a visual artist a few months after the birth of her second child. She studied at Greenwich House Pottery in New York City and the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado before establishing her ceramics practice out of Gasworks, a community studio based in Brooklyn.

Burson’s functional Bumps collection includes vases, ring dishes, and bookends. Using a combination of wheel and hand-building techniques, Burson forms and paints each piece individually before its initial firing. The interior of each vase is then treated with a watertight glaze, and Burson hand-applies the bumps to the exteriors of her pieces using a unique semifluid glaze recipe. The result is a collection of pieces that are elegant, whimsical, and irresistibly touchable.

Burson’s sculptural work builds upon her love of vessels and her practice of altering thrown forms. Her creative process and the resulting pieces explore the tensions between perfection and imperfection, control and irresponsibility, the refined and the grotesque.
