I remember driving through the Spanish countryside and commented on all the abandoned stucco houses and farms, probably hundreds of years old and they should be fixed up. “A fresh coat of paint and it’s all good”, my friend Lucas replied. I love to make something new out of something old and this old adage is still true. Meeting other strangers, who become friends while painting is one of my favorite parts of being an artist. Thanks for the opportunity Thom, Alison, and Drei. When I had finished painting, I had accidentally splashed a little paint on their new fence and Thom graciously stated, “It’s your Navajo moment.” Meaning, Tribal rugs from southwest tribes always hide imperfection in them since they believe Mother Earth never made anything perfect. A welcomed compliment indeed.

This is what I’ve learned in four years of not knowing what I’m doing: Be kind, be brave. That’s my mantra. The thing I think helps me so I can go and create, is being kind. And when life is hard, because it will certainly be hard, you have to be brave. Be brave when you’re terrified, take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay.

Josh Scheuerman is a painter, graphic designer and photographer known for using his artistic talents to promote community and environmental activism originally from West Valley City, UT. In 2016, Josh traveled to Spain to recreate a mural for the city of Sant Carles de la Ràpita he had originally painted in 2012. In 2017, he shared a retrospective of his work for Salt Lake Design Week titled, Act Like You Know What You are Doing. He was also in a group show, Urban Plein Air at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, curated by THE BLOCKS, Salt Lake’s Cultural Core in September 2018. He was worked with numerous arts councils both as an artists and a liaison for the arts. Current and past clients include INDUSTRY, POWRD CORP, STRUCK, WeWork, Cafe Rio, Tru Hotel in Ogden, Laziz, and RoHa Brewery and Brighton Ski Resort among many others across the Salt Lake Valley totaling 100+ murals across the west. In the fall of 2021 he was voted Best Muralist by the community in Salt Lake City Weekly 2021 Readers Choice Awards.
