This one-of-a-kind redwood burl end tables is Length: 31” Width: 27” Height: 23½”
Redwood burl or “Sequoia sempervirens” is found from southwestern Oregon to the coastal northwest are of California. The tree can grow up to 300 feet and twelve feet in diameter. The heartwood spans from a deep red-brown to a pink brown with patterning that sometimes include “lace”. The burl, which is a growth on the side, root or base of the tree, brings deeper reds, browns and golds. This redwood burl is from Northern California.
The white stone is Mookaite jasper from Western Australia. Jasper which means “speckled stone” and is an aggregate of quartz, chalcedony and various minerals. Jasper can be brown, red, green, yellow, blue or a combination of those colors. Red is most common because of the iron content. Blue is considered rare. Malachite is the green stone; it is a mineral composed of green copper carbonate hydroxide. The inlay also includes Chyrsocolla which is a hydrated phyllosilicate mineral. It comes from Greek chrysos meaning ‘gold’ and kola ‘glue’ although its color is typically a combination of blue and green. Chyrsocolla is found in the United States in Arizona, Utah, New Mexico. Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Idaho. The Chyrsocolla used in this table is from Arizona. Agate is made up of cryptocrystalline silica with quartz. Agate is a variety of colors and is typically associated with volcanic rocks. Copper is the inlay. It is typically found in multiple states in the U.S. including Utah, Arizona, Montana, Michigan and New Mexico. Copper is very malleable and has a beautiful reddish-brown color that accents the Redwood burl.
The finish contains five coats of Tung oil; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the wood. Wood does expand and contract making it subject to slight checking, cracking and movement. To maintain the beauty of the Redwood Burl avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel. For polishing a beeswax solution such as Howard Feed-N- Wax or Artisan Lemon Oil Wax is good. Just follow the directions from the manufacturer.
