This mural on a residence in the great neighborhood of Fishtown in Philadelphia has a story behind it. The owners approached me with the idea that they wanted to give something to their neighborhood and honor the time long tradition of utilizing the fish to honor their neighborhood.

We discussed what they were thinking and we were specific with certain details of the piece. They wanted the fish to face towards the Delaware River. They also wanted to make sure the fish was a Shad specific to speak to the Shad Fishing Company that was started as early as the neighborhood.

The flowers on the corners of the piece are the Penngift Crownvetch. The Pennsylvania state plant. This plant is known to be used for multiple reasons including feeding livestock. So the plant is used to nourish the animals and in turn nourish the community.

It is also used to prevent erosion and soil decay. The plant has strong roots that hold onto the dirt and prevent it from washing away. This was a great metaphor to the owners of the residence as they were putting down their roots here in their home and will build their family and stories from here on out.
