This was one of three larger works from my series ANGELINOS.
ANGELINOS is a series of wire sculpture portraits and figurative works created between 2018 and 2019, inspired by the local residents surrounding my old neighborhood in central Los Angeles. The people I saw daily were marked by desperation and the drive to get what the needed, along with a level of exhaustion and disassociation. In these works, I strove to capture these complex emotions and drives faithfully - not their surface, but the truth beneath.
Aesthetically, I was influenced by graffiti, gesture and contour drawing, and comics - the idea that through simplification, we can amplify the humanity of the subject. Through my loose gestural portraits, I aim to create something that feels more real than it looks.
