Porcelain net sculpture. Custom design for the Marriott International Headquarters Hotel in Bethesda, Maryland. The concept for this sculpture comes from a latin philosophy called 'amor fati' - that everything in life is good and necessary. Translated through my artistic process, amor fati characterizes making, failing, and accepting certain outcomes.
I explore the concept of amor fati through a body of work based on grids and cubes, forms that are seemingly perfect or unflawed. I build these pieces by hand, choosing to allow the human nature of handwork to come through in the inevitable imperfections. The resulting sculptures are imperfect representations of these perfect forms, forcing me to accept the flaws as my fate as an artist, and a good and necessary part of my process.
