Intersect

What can we do with a single curve? The Intersect collection is the result of answering this question.

The restriction for this collection was one and simple. The objects have to emerge from one continuous line. It didn’t take long after sketching on paper to start making shapes by intersecting the line with itself.

When I saw that in 2D I immediately imagined the possibilities that arise when you translate the geometry into 3D.

A nice contradiction revealed itself between the one continuous line and the individual volumes or containers that it creates. It was funny in a way because I started this series with the idea of the union by having just one continuous line but that led me eventually to its opposite.

This showed me in a very elegant way how shapes can emerge from very basic building blocks and become complicated. Very much how nature does it in so many ways.

Exploring the boundaries of a world where analog meets digital.

BinaryCeramics was created out of the passion and research the artist Yiannis Vogdanis put into developing systems that make 3D printing semi-fluid materials possible.

“I always strive to find ways that allow me to materialize and show the beauty that I encounter through my research in terms of forms, patterns, vibrations, and subtle things that exist around us but oftentimes go unnoticed.”

Yiannis Vogdanis is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Athens, Greece. His career started in Rome after graduating from the “Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma.” His area of interest lies at the meeting point of craft, design, and science. Yiannis’ passion to explore and hone his craft led him to live in places like San Francisco, Berlin, and Barcelona, working for universities and high-tech startups. In Barcelona he acquired a master’s degree in advanced interaction design from UPC. More recently, Yiannis has focused on exploring the limits of digital fabrication and creative programming.
