Above the limestone mantel in the lobby of The Ludlow, Robert Laughlin's "The Brute" painting is flanked by two Apparatus Studio horsehair sconces. The sconces are a robust study of material that evokes the grace and strength of its equine contributor. Wefts of horsehair were combined with brass and etched glass.

Meet the Creator

"Born from playful experimentation with vintage lighting components, Apparatus is a New York-based design studio that specializes in aged brass, etched glass, leather, marble, and porcelain.

Each individual fixture is assembled by hand in their studio. Raw brass components are meticulously finished to reveal layers of uncommon beauty. Molded and blown-glass components are etched and painted to achieve the "perfect imperfect," combining to create lighting fixtures, furniture and objects that fuse sculptural form with hand-worn materials."
