Ram - Murals

I was commissioned to do a mural at the Gateway Grille in Kamas in the same style we found on Google images about fluid and loose animal images of wildlife. One image was a painting by renowned southwest artist Virgil C Stephens, which ended up being the same painting (although 10x the size), now at 66 years old, started sign painting 40+ years ago and started his original painting career 10 years after that. It’s been ups and downs from there, but I was the first artist who reached out to compensate him for using his art as a reference or blatantly stealing it. I painted the ram from a reference photo in the same style to keep the same vibe. After a phone conversation, we agreed on 10% fee of the full mural price for using his image for compensation. Since then we have talked several times and I hope to host him at a Utah Gallery for his first gallery show in Utah and first show in 19 years. We all use reference materials for art, but if it’s someone’s art, be honest and compensate them. You never know if you may become fast friends through our art. Give him a follow or better yet, check out his website for a full portfolio. Please don’t be H&M, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Disney, or any other company stealing art. Reaching out may award you the same trust as JASON NAYLOR just did in handling the logistics for his most recent mural. Let’s support and care for each other when possible.

This is what I’ve learned in four years of not knowing what I’m doing: Be kind, be brave. That’s my mantra. The thing I think helps me so I can go and create, is being kind. And when life is hard, because it will certainly be hard, you have to be brave. Be brave when you’re terrified, take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay.

Josh Scheuerman is a painter, graphic designer and photographer known for using his artistic talents to promote community and environmental activism in his native Salt Lake City and abroad. In early 2013, he collected 500+ pounds of plastic from the farthest corners of Utah for a public art installation called Four Corners: Eliminating Single Use Plastic Bags that was presented at TED-X SLC and PechKucha. In 2016, he traveled to Spain to recreate a mural for the city of Sant Carles de la Ràpita he had originally painted in 2012. In 2017, he shared a retrospective of his work for Salt Lake Design Week titled, Act Like You Know What You are Doing. He was also in a group show, Urban Plein Air at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, curated by THE BLOCKS, Salt Lake’s Cultural Core in September 2018. His most recent work includes murals of historical sites and places, including one promoting preservation of the Bears Ears National Monument, after the Trump administration dramatically reduced its foot print in 2018.
