Berkeley Potter's Wall

Inspired by the ceramic-covered walls created by Antoni Gaudi in the Parc Guell in Barcelona, Andrew Werby had the idea to do something similar with broken pieces of hand-made pottery created in local ceramic studios (which were numerous in the late '70s, when this was built). With some support from government and industry, he put collection drums in many of these places and assembled the necessary materials. With the help of many volunteers, they built an undulating stack-sack wall (a technique used for building emergency levees) with integral planters and benches and covered it in a mosaic of shards.

Meet the Creator

Andrew works in a wide range of media—including some originals, like Sculpted Paint, which he developed himself. He has made a life-project around utilizing directly-captured natural forms and textures in his art.
