Spark - Public Mosaics

Item details

Wowhaus transformed an existing planetarium was into a landmark on the campus via four architecturally integrated mosaic murals. Created from thousands of pieces of hand-cut glass, iridescent glass and mirror, the four 10’ h x 12’ wide murals feature abstract images of a spark. The imagery evokes the spark of inspiration, creativity and insight fostered through education at the college; the spark also references the spirit of scientific inquiry and the cosmos. Imagery was inspired by dialogue with the college community, including students, faculty and staff. Iridescent glass and mirror cast colored light on passerby, shifting with the passage of the sun throughout the day.

Engineer: ZFA Structural Engineers • Installation: G4 Fabrication • Special thanks to Alexandra Blatteis, Wowhaus Studio Assistant, for her dedication and skill and to Diane Zuliani

Founded in 1997, Wowhaus is a trans-disciplinary art and design team whose work spans public art, strategic planning, design and architecture. A collaboration between Scott Constable and Ene Osteraas-Constable, Wowhaus explores the common denominators of everyday life, the central question of how things, places and relationships acquire meaning. We embrace a systems-based, community-engaged approach, finding inspiration in the cultural, historical and ecological factors that shape a sense of place. Our projects connect individuals and communities to their current ecological and societal realities, aiming to strengthen the mutually beneficial potential of each.
