Tech Vanitas: Red Phone

Item details

"Red Phone", a photograph in my series "Tech Vanitas", is on view in the showroom of Shah & Shah Distinctive Jewelers in Washington DC. This print is 36 x 24" not including the frame.

We live in an age filled with devices that make domestic life faster, smarter, easier, and more complicated. Cutting-edge technology becomes outdated, collectible, and finally, antiquated. My "Tech Vanitas" photographs embrace the anxiety surrounding technological obsolescence. I reference both 17th Century Dutch “Vanitas” still life paintings and contemporary product photography. Just as the Dutch paintings portray the abundance afforded a prosperous culture, "Tech Vanitas" embraces luxury and the fleeting nature of earthly pleasures.

Jeanette May's artistic photographs are filled with whimsy and humor.

Jeanette May is a photo-based artist using a critical, sometimes playful, approach to investigate representation. Early training as a painter is evident in her carefully arranged compositions and rich color palette. Jeanette “makes” photographs: constructed, staged, lit, and carefully considered. Her recent still life project, "Tech Vanitas", embraces her love of vintage tech and the anxiety surrounding technological obsolescence.

Jeanette received her MFA in Photography from CalArts and her BFA in Painting from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her work is exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, including New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Shanghai, Barcelona, Milan, and Athens.

Jeanette lives in Brooklyn, NY, and works from her studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (EFA) in Manhattan.
