Item details

Jeanette May's photographs for her "Morbidity & Mortality" series is at the Brooklyn Arts Council's conference room in Brooklyn, NY.

"Morbidity & Mortality" is my light-hearted and fluffy response to the current popular fascination with depictions of crime scenes, murder, and forensics. I photograph humorous, staged murder scenes of fluffy pet toys that are simultaneously creepy and whimsical. A sense of humor helps! A framed 24 x 36" print is documented here.

Jeanette May's artistic photographs are filled with whimsy and humor.

Jeanette May is a photo-based artist using a critical, sometimes playful, approach to investigate representation. Early training as a painter is evident in her carefully arranged compositions and rich color palette. Jeanette “makes” photographs: constructed, staged, lit, and carefully considered. Her recent still life project, "Tech Vanitas", embraces her love of vintage tech and the anxiety surrounding technological obsolescence.

Jeanette received her MFA in Photography from CalArts and her BFA in Painting from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her work is exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, including New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Shanghai, Barcelona, Milan, and Athens.

Jeanette lives in Brooklyn, NY, and works from her studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (EFA) in Manhattan.
