'The book (of nature) is written in the language of mathematics....' Galilleo

The intricacies of filigree vegetation, seed heads, meadows, grasses, woodland but also more distant vistas are the source material for my work. The geometric, Islamic patterns mimic the exuberant patterns and rhythms of the natural world, acting as metaphors and hopefully lending a contemplative mood.

I consider these two systems to be at play together; geometric pattern and the natural world. I am also interested in exploring ideas about the ‘decorative’ in fine art and how traditional ornament, patterns or motifs can be re-employed in a contemporary context. I see no boundaries to using elements from other cultures and the use of geometry and Islamic pattern plays a central role in the construction of my work. Geometry might appear opposed to nature, but mathematical order seems to permeate everything; ‘The book (of nature) is written in mathematical language...’ said Galileo. Establishing colour which reflects the gorgeousness of the environment is a primary concern on which everything is balanced in order to make a pictorial space, which must be evocative and engulfing. The final work is a collaboration of these seemingly opposed sources.

I work in a studio in my garden, from drawings and photographs, through to small gouaches and collages, exploring the idea in mind. Many smaller pieces, valid in their own way result from this process. The larger resulting works are usually made in oil – but sometimes acrylic.

I studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. More recently I did an MA in Fine Art at Bath Spa School of Art. I have exhibited widely; recently at Andelliart in Wells, Lanehouse Arts in Bath and the Wells Contemporary Open as well as the RWA in Bristol and the Bath Society of Artists.
