Acrylic Paint on Burlap, 24"x30".

"Untitled" (Royal Purple) was featured in my show entitled "Every Day" at One River, NY. Statement from the show's press release: "Upon first exploration, I found abstraction to be liberating, offering what seemed like endless possibilities. Naturally, the longer I kept at it, the more challenges came my way which slowed my process and growth. I knew painting was a vital form of communication, but was having a hard time allowing myself to do so. In an attempt to expand upon my traditional art making process, I began experimenting with more accessible approaches such as dyeing or digital manipulation. I found this to be liberating and the exploration of such alternative methods prompted me to work through ideas rather than in one particular style of art making.

Ultimately I wanted to be able to paint “every day” and produce work that was relevant to a broad audience. I have long been interested in making work that engages all types of art viewers which prompted me to turn to the internet for insight. My curiousity ultimately led me to “” where I began to experiment with the listed prompts for how to make an abstract painting in my own practice.

Every Day refers to our daily personal and societal rituals, routines and experiences. These paintings are the result of many years of committed attention to living and painting with the intention of doing so through an accessible process. Painting can be as simple as using tape to make straight lines on a surface and as complicated as applying a person's culminated life experiences to do so. Every Day explores our collective consciousness and its effect on the human act of leaving something personal behind."

Let the materials do the work.

My work explores the process of painting by incorporating tools or strategies to act as intermediaries between my hand and the surface. By employing accessible approaches to image making, (dying, taping, etc.) I am interested in exploring a space that democratizes abstraction. The resulting body of work is created by using dye to affect a burlap substrate (by additive or subtractive methods) on which I apply generous amounts of acrylic paint to masked areas. The result is a body of work that is as unpredictable as it is expected, that is simultaneously both fast and slow.
