“Flood” — Lucy Corwin painted this commission for her sister while renovating her home five years ago. Among other stressful inevitabilities that emerge during renovations, a huge leak sprung and flooded her kitchen. She didn’t have a studio space at the time, so she was painting in the midst of boxes of tile, paint cans, and general mess. Her sister’s one request for this painting was that she wanted it to be “calming.” At the time, she felt anything but somehow this painting emerged through the stress of it all and reminded her how the act of painting calms her when everything else feels chaotic.
