Oil on canvas, 500X250X45mm

In this series of oil paintings I played with the concept of bokeh, interpreting colours and subtle shapes through overlapping layers of glazes. The resulting abstract dappled light reveals a camouflaged creature.

For many creatures camouflage and stillness are a matter of course to ensure their survival. It’s that quality of stillness set against a vibrancy of light that was my inspiration.

I am of African soil. There is a vibrant heartbeat here that reminds you daily that all of life is connected. The wonder of it is universal and I celebrate this through my oil paintings. On a global scale it is vital that we connect to the natural environment and tread lightly in our daily lives. I thread this sentiment in quirky, subtle ways into my work.

I was originally a graphic art graduate from Cape Town (majoring in Printmaking and Photography) after which I lived for 23 years with my nature conservation husband and our two young daughters, on a remote nature reserve in an arid region called the Little Karoo ("Karoo" is Khoisan for Land of Thirst). We relocated to a nearby historical, rural town of Oudtshoorn in 2017 where my studio is now based. This lifestyle of being immersed in nature has had a great influence on my work and the way I see the world. I am passionate about the environment and natural living.

I began painting watercolours in earnest in 1985 at the age of 15 and oils in 2001. My graphic design background (pre digital technology) shaped the way I see everyday scenes around me as a graphic interplay of light, colours and shapes; I am constantly aware of the striking and the subtle patterns within them; and of the tensions and energies created between shapes and lines. And how all of these aspects can be used within my compositions to inspire emotion.

I believe that art, in any form, is vital to opening our eyes anew to the world around us; to make us see everyday things
or situations in a way which we may not have previously experienced and, with regards to my own work specifically,
to reflect upon our relationship as humans to the environment - on a local and global level.

Exhibiting in group exhibitions since 1993, my work forms part of collections locally and abroad.
