Colorful Abstract Paintings that Bring Warmth and Whimsy to Homes Throughout the United States and Beyond

Laurie DeVault is a California native with a degree in art from Humboldt State University. She earned her M.Ed. from UMass Amherst and is now retired from full-time teaching. She spends her time making a joyful mess in her home studio, and also loves traveling, photography (see A Loving Eye Photography), music, gardening, cooking, hiking, and more.
She was fortunate to grow up in a home where art was valued and where her own creative efforts were encouraged. Some of her happiest times were spent with paper, paints, and markers. She was an incessant doodler all through school, and dreamed of becoming a children's book writer and illustrator.
Although she earned a B.A. in art, she became an elementary classroom teacher, teaching all subjects and rarely painting for herself. In later years she raised a son and started a small portrait photography business (A Loving Eye Photography) while still teaching. Those were busy times.
Now retired from full-time teaching, she has picked up her paintbrush once again. She feels she has returned home after a long journey, and the homecoming is sweet, indeed! In her studio she is free, true to herself, and endeavors to stay in the present moment with her brush and intuition as her guides. She strive to get out of her own way, ignoring the voices of judgement and self doubt. It is only then that her work comes alive and sings with joy and authenticity.
She says that sometimes she feels like a sculptor who senses a beautiful shape hidden within the stone; all she has to do is chip away until it is revealed. When she spreads paint on canvas, Laurie looks to see what it is telling her. It leads, she follows, and when she gets to a place that feels right, she says simply,.... yes.
