Contemporary abstractions: Painting the turmoil of living, growing. and connecting.
Expressive painting that highlights brushstroke, mark-making, and texture of the living energy of paint and the painting process.
Each of my paintings emerge over time with layers of texture, marks, colour, and materials in a call-and-response-like manner. Marks are laid down and call for the next response in the form of action. Each stoke or pull of the knife informs and provokes the next mark. My painting is a visual expression of the struggle of this process.
The process of painting mirrors the struggle we all experience just by living as a human being. There are peaks and valleys during this creative process — it can be both exhilarating and depressing. It can feel like an emotional rollercoaster. The struggles in the process of making a painting and the struggles in our lives contain a message that gives us information about the next decision we need to make. When I hit an obstacle in the process of making a painting, I know I need to make a change in my approach. The obstacle is the message.
I am particularly interested in the themes of transition, struggle and development, and am inspired by living, growing, and connecting — AKA being human! Each work marks some struggle I’ve gone through to learn and grow. When you read the titles of my paintings, you know I attribute meaning to each piece.
Life will inevitably present struggle to each of us — to struggle is universal. My paintings celebrate the value of struggle in our lives.
