The backside of a colorful row of historic houses in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, known as Rainbow Row. The lucious lilac and pale yellow plus interesting shadows are what drew me. Oil on canvas, custom framed in natural wood floater frame.

contemporary impressionist oil painter

Artist Julia Chandler Lawing synchronizes color and brushstroke to capture the essence of a moment and evoke emotion. Her oil paintings have been called “extravagantly beautiful, spiritual and inspiring.”

Born in Atlanta, Julia moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia, at age 12. The experience of growing up in the Golden Isles instilled a deep appreciation for nature, light, and the wetland landscape.

Julia’s pieces are included in private and corporate collections nationally including Towne Bank and Georgia State university's College of Law. Her paintings have been reproduced and installed as billboards, window clings and sheet metal in the greater Charlotte area.

Julia and her family live just north of Charlotte. When not traveling, Julia paints in her studio at ClearWater Arts Center.
