Paintings by Judy Rifka seen at Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas - Square Dress

Square Dress

"In "Square Dress," the strokes of black acrylic paint are so animated that, without the title, it is difficult to understand the work's subject. Once it is known, however, the different shapes fall into place and a figure with outstretched arms materializes. Judy Rifka concentrates on the structure of the dress, whose parallel lines emphasize the flowing fabric that streams down from the waistline like a waterfall. With their characteristic wavering black lines, Judy Rifka's works depict people, buildings, and everyday objects. They have a unique sense of movement, a nervous energy that pulsates within the frame and out toward the viewer."
