kuro and the burn the flag serie - Wall Hangings
$ On Inquiry
Kuro is made of plywood, which I burned in my garden according to a Japanese technique called Shou Sugi Ban.
When I was a little kid a dining chair catch fire during our Christmas diner caused by the candle in the Christmas tree, afterwards the chair was still in use for many years. I always loved the black silvery finish and the crackle structure of it to see how the light breaks on it.
Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi is an ancient Japanese exterior siding technique that preserves wood by charring it. The first reason they did so was to protect against fire ,it also turned out to make it more durable, and resist against rot and insects, it can last up to 80 years, the technique is still used on places like Naoshima in Japan.
In 1993 I went to Kyoto to study Japanese calligraphy.
