I absolutely enjoyed creating this artwork as I was experimenting with different colourways with alcohol inks on a convex mirror film which is an exciting medium to work with. This artwork only comes in 60cm diameter by 10cm deep convex film structure. I have memories of being inside the marae in Mangatu at my mother’s tangi. The kaumatua were talking to the carving of Rawiri Tamanui. Whilst they spoke, I knew I was a part of something; I also knew I was disconnected from it because of my lack of te reo. Creating this reflective piece about Rawiri Tamanui has allowed me to discover my ancestry and feel pride in reconnecting to my whakapapa. Reflection is part of the journey. Rawiri Tamanui was a great Maori warrior, he was a fighter, leader and chief of Nga Ariki Kaiputahi.

I am excited about my new series of artworks that explores the inter-play of natural and artificial light onto the surface of my convex mirror paintings.

My name is Frederick and I am a London-based Award-Winning Maori Artist. I create contemporary art pieces and photography for the interior design and architectural sector, as well as commissioned pieces for individuals.

Creating art excites me. I like creating bright, vibrant pieces. I like how art can challenge people’s thinking. I love how it can inspire and create an emotional response. I create aesthetically beautiful, decadent pieces - statement pieces - that make my clients feel great inside.

I am a New Zealand born artist-interior designer (b.1976) who loves creating photography and large original contemporary expressionist work direct from my studio in London. I do this by using a variety of processes, theory and techniques that add texture and definition to my style of work. Moving to the UK has allowed me to discover my British heritage and connect this with my Maori identity.

After a career in commercial/residential interiors and furniture design and achieving many design awards, locally and nationally in my native New Zealand, I moved to the United Kingdom in 2014 with my wife and two children to seek new opportunities and expand my global awareness.

The essence of my work is inspired by portraiture, nature, texture and colour which can be seen in the strong use of gestures and movement in my brush strokes.

As well as producing new paintings and art to add to my own collection, I also work on commissions for private clients across the world. Please feel free to contact me to discuss your requirements or any questions you may have.

Kind regards

Frederick
