Meet the Creator

"Certainly there are other physician-artists, but I have a somewhat unusual situation in that I actively work in the visual world not only as a painter but also as a diagnostic radiologist. My artwork is naturally informed by my experiences of daily examination of the human body through medical imaging. My work as a radiologist involves paying attention to numerous subtle details while keeping in mind the overall pathologic process; I find creating art is similar in that you are continually consciously and unconsciously responding to mark making and adjusting small facets, while keeping in mind the piece as a whole.

From a young age, I had deep interest in art, science, and the intersection between the two. I have been fortunate to be able to continue making art throughout my medical education and into practice. I was born and raised in the Midwest and received my BA in Studio Art at Wake Forest University. I have since lived in Houston, New Orleans, and most recently, Seattle.

While I have been influenced by human anatomy, medical imagery, and nature in general to a considerable degree, many of my more recent works have drawn on abstract expressionism. I am interested in conveying movement and emotion using often heavily textured application of acrylic on canvas."
