The Forest of Parnassus
Ellen Harvey's The Forest of Parnassus uses the longest-lived inhabitants of the ever-changing UCSF, Parnassus campus to record its past. The project consists of twenty-eight 30”(.76m) x 30” (.76m) paintings in oil on aluminum based on Polaroid images of the campus. Each painting is a portrait of a tree or cluster of trees on the campus, the trees’ surroundings providing an incidental record of the physical plant of the campus at the time of the project’s completion. As the campus changes, many of the trees will remain, recognizable in their new habitats. Students are thrilled seeing these trees both from the past and the present.
