Appropriation & Inspiration: George Washington - Paintings

Creator not accepting inquiries

"Would you recognize George Washington in this photograph without its companion piece by Foeiqua? With the ghostly image, Bill Armstrong invites us to consider how we distort our heroes. The intense presence is like a blank canvas waiting to be filled in with our own ideas about this national icon. Armstrong achieved the blurry, elusive silhouette by turning the camera onto the painting by Foeiqua and opening the aperture to let more light infuse the image. “The nature of visual perception intrigues me,” Armstrong said, “how the eye continually tries to resolve these images, but is unable to do so, and how that is unsettling."
