Lovely mural painted by Amy Frueh at La Palmita in Tulum. The centre of this mural is the Vanilla Orchid also known as the Planifolia variety of orchid. It is a vine-like, climbing orchid and the vanilla it produces was used by both the Mayans and the Aztecs to flavor a hot chocolate drink. It was introduced to Europe in the 1500’s and Europeans tried to grow it for almost 300 years with no success. It was later discovered that the flower cannot self-pollinate, but requires the help of small bees, such as the stingless melipona bee, native to tropical climates.
