SFAI, Fort Mason Campus Mural
Winner of the 2017 SECA award, Oakland-based artist and mission school alumni Alicia McCarthy has been commissioned by the San Francisco Art Institute, to create a mural in the new Fort Mason graduate student studio space. McCarthy is currently a beloved professor at SFAI with a strong sense of community and support. These ideals can be interpreted within the undulating weavings and colorful strips of her eco-friendly materials of water based spray paint and marine grade plywood. The resulting effect is a dazzling, optical portal that stands at the top of the staircase connecting the bottom and upper levels. Opting for a black background, the vibrant stripes pop off the surface, which really enmeshes and immerses the viewer into her work.
