This mural brings life and color into a healing environment. Spanning down two hallways and even into procedure rooms, the installation evokes a feeling of entering a giant aquarium. Before the art installation, the procedure rooms contained large pieces of equipment that were intimidating to little patients. Because it was impossible to hide the equipment, the artist decided to incorporate the equipment into the artistic theme for the unit. By making the procedure rooms into “submarines control rooms”, Katherine was able to bring the sea creatures into the rooms for patients to focus on, and the equipment then became part of the underwater story. Patients and visitors alike have enjoyed the art on many levels. The aquatic murals have been used on several occasions for calming patients with mental disorders. There is even an aquatic identification chart for children who want to know the names of the creatures in the paintings.
