Interior Design

Located at the centre of Victoria’s eclectic and tightly knit Fernwood neighbourhood, Parsonage Cafe is a much-loved fixture in the community. After operating in its previous location for over a decade, the Fernwood Coffee team took over the current space, a former upholstery and automotive shop, in 2017.

A key facet of our design brief was to preserve the character, ambiance and community connections that have developed in its decade-plus tenure in the neighbourhood, while elevating the quality of design and materials, improving the mechanics of the space and creating an aesthetic that complements the Fernwood Coffee brand as it continues to grow and mature. Our approach to the interior design was to strike a balance between design and minimalism with a sense of real warmth and community.

With key references to Japanese minimalism and mid-century Austrian office interiors, we selected a palette comprised of five varieties of woods to create a warm and inviting space. A secondary palette of grays, whites and blues provides a counterpoint in the more robust kitchen and bar area, offering improved flow and operations for staff. Parsonage is an example of when thoughtful, but not overwrought, design is focused on creating a meeting place that welcomes the community with open arms.

Meet the Creator

Studio Roslyn is a full-service interior design and consulting studio co-founded by principals Jessica Macdonald and Kate Snyder in Vancouver, British Columbia. We specialize in developing considered design solutions for built environments across the milieu of commercial, institutional and residential space.

We hold dear our core belief that true creativity is not to be in conflict with commerce, and that our work should not be bound by the divisions between art, design, fashion and architecture. We work closely with our clients to establish a strong understanding of their businesses, from finance and operations to aesthetics and brand, to form the foundation of each commission that we engage in. From this understanding, we create spaces that are at times unapologetically bold, sumptuously elegant or charming and playful. Each project is its own ecosystem—but we are constantly placing our client’s needs and desire for success at the forefront of our process. We listen well, research hard, think big and execute strong.

The muse of Roslyn personified provides a conceptual focal point of our studio and our aspiration as designers. She is fearless, provocative and highly intelligent. She knows how to ask the tough questions and make the hard decisions, but she also has a steady hand and a warm heart. She is at the core of what defines our spirit, ethos and aesthetic.
