Riverside Drive Pre-War - Interior Design

After completing minor renovations, this couple with two small children came to us feeling at odds with the “unfinished” vibe of their home. The monochromatic furnishings just didn’t reflect the family’s vibrant nature. Though furnished, bare windows made for cold and exposed rooms. The dining room, open to both the kitchen and entry foyer, combined a specific traffic flow with exposed ceiling beams, making it impossible to center a chandelier over the dining table. The room also suffered from an awkward pair of pocket doors which had been sealed shut to create an adjacent bedroom. In addition, noise from the common elevator hallway filtered through the apartment making it obvious that sound was traveling both ways. Our intent was to enliven the living space with color and infuse it with energy; add soundproofing in the entry foyer and create a sensual, soft and serene bedroom.
A Josef Frank fabric provided ample inspiration for the living room. The client was instantly enamored and the scheme developed from this initial spark. Incorporating the existing sofas, rug and cocktail table, we added dramatic geometric window panels, textural pillows, soft throw blankets and colorful lamps. A green mohair pouf and deep blue Mongolian lamb hair bench provide pops of color saturation and additional seating. The club chairs, previously upholstered in a light blue and cream boucle, were reupholstered in a modern matelassé which ended up being one of the room’s main game changers. The client’s art collection amplified the interior elements and interjected a burst of color and life.
The large-scale patterned wallpaper in the dining room added much needed vibrancy and spatial definition, while distressed mirror panels concealed the awkward pocket doors and gave the room sparkle. To solve the off-center ceiling condition, we recommended an asymmetrical Lindsey Adelman three-arm bubble chandelier. Faux patent leather wallpaper in a high-gloss blue was installed in the entry foyer, which added reflectivity and significantly reduced hallway noise. To further enhance a feeling of privacy, dramatic drapery panels and textural grasscloth wallcovering were added to the master bedroom. A custom-made, upholstered bed in rich mohair and a luxuriously soft custom carpet create the soothing haven they sought.
