The Space:
Situated in a historic red brick house with a gorgeous view of the Avon River in Stratford, the kitchen started out as a an extremely small, dark, and dated space. The existing kitchen had gone through a 1960’s renovation which included a drop tile ceiling, vinyl flooring, ceiling fans and dark wood-stained cabinets. The kitchen was dull and uninviting with a very dysfunctional layout.

The Challenge:
At being only 200 sqft, this kitchen was small. With the client being a very avid cook, it was extremely important that the space became not only user friendly but also warm and inviting with a design that fit in with the age of the house.

The Solution
To ensure that the space became as functional as possible we removed a chimney that ran through one of the kitchen walls. This completely opened the space while creating a much better flow between the dining room and the kitchen
With this excess brick from the chimney, we were able to raise the existing window in the kitchen to allow for cabinets with the sink to run underneath it. This allowed for a wonderful view into the garden while standing at the sink.
To ensure the kitchen looked like it was part of the historic home, attention to detail was extremely important. This included face frame cabinets, solid brass hardware, a paneled fridge and dishwasher as well as high quality lighting. We added in the unique element of William Morris wallpaper behind the range covered with a custom piece of glass to create a one-of-a-kind backsplash. Green painted cabinetry and a custom-made walnut and tiger maple table as the center island connected the space to the outdoors. All these elements combined created a space that looks like it came together over time.

Interior Designer rooted in the belief that the relationship between form and function are an inegral part of good design

When designing an interior, I always try and view myself as the person who will use the area on a daily basis. Having the ability to visualize myself maneuvering through the space is detrimental to understanding how the average person will interact with their surroundings.
I strongly believe that good design is for everyone, as living and working in beautiful spaces directly contribute to happier and healthier individuals. Being able to be a part of creating beautiful surroundings for others to enjoy continues to be the reason why design is such an integral part of my life.
