Floating Whatnot

atPrivate ResidencePortland, OR
This piece functions as both wall installation and shelf. I find the design works best when left sparse with only a few items displayed. It presents an interesting opportunity to adjust your display for the season or to highlight your current interests. The piece is inspired by the Japanese tokonoma display; a small alcove in the room designed to display items that guests would traditionally enjoy and comment on as part of the tea ceremony. The shelves are made from elm burl, which is a scarce resource due to the Dutch Elm Disease, the Cascade mountains have protected the West Coast Elm population making this material a local treasure.
