The form of this piece was inspired by topographical maps of North Texas, while the region’s historical ties to ranching informed the choice of leather lacing to create the line work. The work was inspired by a previous installation created out of found leather in El Paso, Texas, where the long, linear movement of the leather strands evoked the mountainous West Texas landscape.

Susannah Mira earned a master’s degree in Environmental Art at Aalto University in Helsinki in 2008. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, and has been awarded close to two dozen artist residencies throughout North America, including opportunities at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and McColl Center for Art + Innovation. Born in San Francisco and raised in a nondescript Philadelphia suburb, she has lived and worked in Houston since 2013.
