Illumination #21

This collage is composed of images of ancient manuscripts. Rachel Leibman cut the images into small pieces and created her own composition. She used manuscripts from all religions and cultures to represent the human connections in our global society. The piece is finished with multiple layers of acrylic and varnish and buffed to a satiny sheen. She loves that this collage is hanging in the renowned Art Collection at the Hebrew Home where it can be seen every day by residents and guests.

Meet the Creator

For my collages, I use small pieces of paper as my palette and “paint” colorful, detailed and elaborate pictures. They are composed of images from ancient illuminated manuscripts, totems, murals, urban graffiti and even scraps of left-over paper.

The collages pay homage to those who came before and celebrate the uniqueness of our varied heritages. At the same time, they illuminate the human interconnectedness and cultural melding that define our global society.

I love the medium of collage because it provides a vehicle for presenting many layers of meaning. It allows me to choose the source materials, as well as the subject matter, in order to impart my point of view.”
