This piece was inspired by Maria Martinez, an Indigenous (Tewa heritage of the San Ildefonso Pueblo in the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico) artist who became internationally known for her pottery. Inspired by the depth and richness of her ceramic creations, this piece features her famous “black on black” style of work.
Fact about Maria: She began learning the skill from her aunt at age 11, working with her family to preserve the cultural art of Traditional pottery.
