I Captured It With My Camera (Destruction Island and Thomas Pheasant Cabinet)

"I captured it with my camera (Destruction Island and Thomas Pheasant Cabinet)" is a framed collage on vintage postcard. This imagery is sourced from different points in time - the postcard, a found object from the late 1970’s and the cabinet, cut directly from a contemporary design magazine. The surrealistic composition depicts an island completely obstructed by a radiant cabinet, a seemingly massive object made of wood, leather and bronze. The works are meant to be a literal compression of the zeitgeist of landscape and the items created from its’ resources. Each representing a different placeholder for desire, ambivalence, adventure, and comfort.

This piece is part of The New Aloha, a series of postcard collages that spans the past three years and is compiled of over 70 works.

Meet the Creator

Alissa Polan works with collage, photography and sculpture examining society’s proclivity to equate nature with consumption, affluence and capitalism. In her series, The New Aloha, she uses photography’s ability to replace ownership; acquiring postcards of beautiful places and combining them with magazine images of expensive unattainable objects. She creates surrealistic landscapes, pairing the images with titles and text lifted from the back of the postcards, fusing that text with the descriptions of the featured opulent items. The imagery, titles and text become an awkward compression, conflating desire and ambivalence. Her work explores the mechanics of photographic representation, fantasy and authenticity and is influenced by California history, the paradoxes of a suburban upbringing and an increasingly complicated relationship with nature.
